The Arts

The arts within any given community represents the heart of a community - their culture,  their experiences and what they value. Whether it is a painting, a song, or the words written by a writer - the  expression shared is often one that is remembered.

Whether the art you see is in the inner city or on the wall in a rural community - if you look long and allow your imagination to open up you will hear the story the artist intended for you to hear.

This past year my own son took part in such a project in the City of Mauston. The project was the inspiration of a very talented and local artist, Diane Dahl.   A woman who is on a mission to build the arts in Juneau County.

Diane asked that area residents send her artwork on Juneau County, and through a grant she received she took inspiration from the others and designed a mural which has since been painted on a wall off of State Street in Mauston, and on the west side of downtown.

She not only designed the mural, pulling in the work of others, but she also invited the community to take part in the project, hands on. She wanted them to come out and paint alongside with her.  My own son, 12 at the time, took her up on that offer and every day after school rushed over to the location and painted.

After just a couple of weeks from the first brush stroke the mural was finished. A mural that is not only breathtaking but one that captures the beauty of Juneau County. The pride of the locals who live and work here is displayed proudly on that wall - the beauty of the landscape we call home - the farms that dot the terrain mixed in with the wildlife and peaceful sunsets on the waters.

It is because of her dedication to bringing an awakening to the arts that surround all of us, the creative expressions that have always been there which woven in the fabric of the community, that this writer has decided to dedicate a complete page of this site to The Arts.

We often overlook the talent behind what we partake in to soothe our souls -whether it is staring at a painter's brush strokes, or the melody playing in our heads...and even some times the words we read when trying to understand the world around us - Art is everywhere - that form of communication of a culture through the eyes of an artist - The Arts page will be dedicate in sharing the who those people are here in our community.

Please stop by often and see who tells our story - Juneau County's story of it's history, it's people and it's future. The page is currently a work in progress and will be added on to as time progresses -
